GTA 6 Grassrivers guide: Leonida's Everglades, airboats, and swamp survival

Flooded grasslands, twenty-foot pythons, and the first genuinely new vehicle class in years. Everything confirmed about GTA 6's swamp region and how to work it.

01What the Grassrivers are

The Grassrivers are Leonida's Everglades: a vast natural region of flooded grasslands, mangroves, marshes and slow rivers making up one of the largest wilderness areas on the map. Even the name is a deep cut — it nods to Marjory Stoneman Douglas' 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grass, which is exactly the kind of detail Rockstar layers in for people paying attention. The region debuted in Trailer 1 with two consecutive shots: an airboat cutting through the channels, then a flamboyance of flamingos scattered among alligators. Buildings here sit on stilts above the water table, matching real Everglades architecture — settlements exist, but the water owns the region.

02Airboats — why this region has its own vehicle

The airboat is a brand-new vehicle class that has never appeared in a GTA game, and it exists because of this region: the Grassrivers' shallow swamp terrain can't be crossed by standard cars or conventional boats. That has a hard gameplay consequence — parts of this map are simply inaccessible without the right vehicle, which is new territory for GTA. Expect airboat handling to become a skill in its own right, chase sequences where police struggle to follow, and traversal routes that only open up once you own or steal one. Confirmed named locations to anchor your exploration: Paradise Garage and Watson Bay.

03Wildlife that fights back

The Grassrivers host the most dangerous confirmed wildlife roster in the game. Alligators appeared in Trailer 1 and are expected to be an active threat in and near water. Burmese pythons — an invasive species that genuinely grows past twenty feet in the real Everglades — are confirmed, alongside cougars, wild boars and venomous snakes. Read that as a design statement: this region's ambient danger doesn't come from police or gangs, it comes from the environment. Hunting is a confirmed activity across Leonida's wilderness areas, and the Grassrivers' roster suggests it will be the riskiest place to do it. Getting out of your airboat is a decision, not a default.

04The smuggling corridor

Put the confirmed pieces together and the Grassrivers' criminal role writes itself: a huge, low-visibility waterway network between southern Leonida's smuggling routes and the inland regions, navigable only by a vehicle class most police units can't field. Jason's backstory runs through drug-running networks, Brian Heder's operation connects to southern smuggling routes, and the seizure-based economy makes uninterceptable routes literally valuable. Expect story missions moving product through the channels, and expect route knowledge to be worth money in free roam. This is exactly the region where community-sourced intel compounds fastest — our map hub will track Grassrivers pins from day one, because the fastest channels won't be marked on anyone's official map.
